Foster Program

It was a lifelong dream of Michael’s to help animals and in the 10 plus years he has been involved with Grateful Dogs Rescue he has fostered over 50 dogs and puppies. Michael has kindly opened his home to many pregnant dogs and provided a safe and comfortable place for them to have their pups. Then, after the puppies are born, Michael diligently looks after these precious little creatures, checking on them every 4 hours around the clock and tending to those who may need extra medical care. Because we are a foster-based rescue with no physical shelter, we only have the capacity to save as many dogs as we have foster parents. When you become a foster parent with Muddy Paws Rescue, you will personally be saving the life of a dog who might have otherwise not received a second chance. During the week, the foster parent is asked to care for the dog, provide medications if necessary, and report their observations when they return the pet to Oregon Dog Rescue.
Once approved, we’ll send you instructions to note your preferences and availability for the coming weeks. If anything changes on your end, just update your portal to keep us in the know! Foster dogs and puppies have an average length of stay of 2-3 weeks.
How to Be the Best Dog Foster Parent
We strive to re-introduce these dogs to society, assess their individual needs, and provide them with a loving temporary home while matching them with only the best, carefully screened forever homes. “Fostering isn’t for everyone but for those of us that do it, it is one of the most rewarding volunteer jobs I have ever done. Fostering means to my family, that we are giving a chance to those that otherwise would not have a chance through no fault of their own. We treat each dog that comes out of the shelter and into our home like its a puppy so we set boundaries and guidelines for behavior and house manners and we do this for two reasons. By going about it this way, we don’t get frustrated or disappointed. In both cases — dogs and cats — the program coordinators and experienced volunteers are available to consult along the way.
To apply to adopt a dog, please complete a registration form in the first instance and one of our rehoming team will be in touch in due course. We always keep our dogs in a foster home for a minimum of two weeks before putting them up for adoption, so we really get to know the dog’s personality in the home environment. Short term fosters are very helpful to us in cutting back on our boarding fees and giving us flexibility on when we can bring a dog into the program. Why Foster a Dog?
Michael says some of his best memories of fostering are those of the sick puppies who look like they will never make it but pull through and are able to thrive and go on to their forever homes. If you are thinking of taking in a foster pet, check out this list of frequently asked questions to help you make an informative decision. We are a debt free, fiscally responsible organization who is solely funded by your kind and generous donations. If all options are exhausted, and there’s nowhere to put an unclaimed dog, the next step, unfortunately, would be euthanasia. This hasn’t happened to a healthy, non-dangerous animal in at least a decade, because Best Friends has always intervened.
It’s not a job you can just take a break from so it does ease some of the work on our staff as well by having some of those animals in homes. It’s been like that for a little while unfortunately so we are really hoping we can ease things and take a bit of a break with this holiday foster program,” Rippel said. Often, the cats, dogs, kittens and puppies that have found shelter at Lake Norman Humane are sick, injured or have behavior issues and are at risk of euthanasia, according to an appeal for donations. Rehabilitating these dogs and cats is the core of what the group does, the appeal says. Puppies with parvo, kittens with upper respiratory infections, dogs with tumors and cats with broken limbs are just examples of the pets that we have helped heal and find homes. This means new foster families need to foster at least five dogs before being allowed to adopt.
Dogs in Distress Rescue Shelter Dogs
These may be perfectly nice people, but they’re not necessarily making a careful, informed decision with realistic expectations of the caretaking and financial responsibilities of responsible pet ownership. Casually acquired animals often continue to be passed around, and eventually surrendered or impounded. And that’s if they’re lucky enough not to end up with someone abusive or neglectful. Please trust us on this — you cannot identify those people by meeting them once. It’s not a lifetime commitment set in stone; you can start with one animal and see how it goes. Without serious inquiries from reliable new volunteers, a tragic number of animals in Baker County will go unrescued.

+ What type of support will I receive?
This rule was established to prevent people from “fake-fostering” just to adopt. We really need devoted foster families in order to save lives! We know it’s hard to give them up, but every time you do, you save another- and they really deserve to be saved. I am spayed, housebroken, know “sit” and am learning “come”, “wait”, “with me” and “stay”.
I’m very people-focused and love getting attention, pets, and snuggles from, well, everyone! I’m a mellow dog, but don’t let that fool you, I still really enjoy being active. I love going for walks and getting to smell all the good smells in the neighborhood. I’m also very into games of tug-o-war and shredding stuffies.
Please do not give your pets away to strangers on the internet , especially for free. People who acquire animals that way are often doing so impulsively, or because they don’t want to go through a screening process or pay an adoption fee. • Screen adoption applications, call personal, veterinary, and landlord references, and conduct a home visit when possible.
Full-service cat fosters receive login credentials for our operations management program, ShelterLuv. They can even enter “blackout dates,” indicating in advance when they are unavailable for foster care. Each cat gets its own profile, too, which includes all the corresponding data.
In a foster home situation, the dog’s true personality will have a much better chance of shining through, which is sometimes harder to see in a shelter environment. This foster home gives potential adopters a much more accurate insight into the dog’s temperament and character (the good and the quirks!). Foster also allows the dog to socialise in a family situation with other people, dogs and other types of pets, so that any quirks that need work become apparent.
Fostered animals respond more quickly to training, family life and affection than animals that continue to be sheltered after being rescued. They are healthier because they are not being exposed to new shelter dogs on an ongoing basis. Most importantly, our fosters gain invaluable insight into the personality, temperament, needs and any “baggage” that comes with a rescued animal. This knowledge is shared with our adopters, giving the adopting family some guidance as to how they might best continue with their new pet’s training and adjustment to a new home. Bear has striking eyes, that twinkle when he sees you, especially when you have a treat for him. He has only been with his foster family a short time but is already crate trained and has mastered sit.
This entails discussing with that person in advance and communicating the information to BDR. Adopters will be required to provide contact information for their adopted dog’s emergency guardian at the time of adoption. Adoption applications are reviewed thoroughly and the approved applicant is based on what the foster believes will be the best fit for both the family and the dog. When a surrendering pet owner can adequately continue care of the animal throughout the process, they may choose to retain physical custody in lieu of foster care, but the rest of the process is the same.
